My eye is acting weird, second time, please help!?!

Question: My eye is acting weird, second time, please help!?
I'm twelve, and about two weeks ago, my eyes started to act a little... Funny. I was at basketball practice, when all of a sudden my vision became blurred, and had like a rainbow thing, like the sheen of of oil. This lasted about 15 minutes, and during that time I had difficulty looking at things directly. It was like when you look at lights, but only worse.
Then, today, it happened again, except this time I developed a headache and was slightly nausous. It lasted about 10 minutes. This was like 20 minutes ago, and I still have a headache.
I get headaches alot, not as much as I used to, though. Also, am near sighted, and I wear contacts.

What Is wrong with me?

Don't worry. It sounds like migraine. Mine started at 12, too, exactly the same way as you describe. You're a little young for doctors to medicate you for this in any major way, but knowing that it's not life threatening is the most important thing.

Does your mother get migraines or headaches? Or your maternal grandmother, if you know her? Or even your father? It does seem to run in families.

In addition to a normal painkiller, try putting something cool on your head, and keeping ice packs in the freezer for these occasions - I find they help. You might find dim lights better, too, and gentle noise to distract you.

But do see a doctor, as only a doctor can properly diagnose migraine. It's a beast to live with until you get used to it, but apparently people with migraine tend to have better memories, and have a lower chance of suffering from stroke later in life, so everything has a plus side.

Definitely sounds like migraine. Thats how mine started at 12. unfortunately I was in my 40's before anyone diagnosed it. With migraines you can avoid them largely if you can avoid your particular triggers. Look up a migraine website and they'll tell you about how to do this. Then speak to your parents. Its important to control migraines - my life would have been a lot easier if i'd been diagnosed and controlled them earlier. As you get older unfortunatley they last longer. What you have are teh classic signs but you do need to go to the doctor who can diagnose it properly and help you with the management.

Now that said not all doctors are very helpful about migraine , some are wonderful but others not. So don't be discouraged if your doctor is not supportive. Make sure you have your parents backing . i have swopped doctors a couple of times till i found one who helped. you may not be able to do this at your age, but bear in mind its an option. Funnily enough I got less headaches as i got more migraines. Its something which isnt' all that well understood. What you have sounds like a migraine with aura, ( thats the rainbow bit). You can get migraines without. Migraines dont' reduce your risk of stroke by the way. I hate to say this but there are absolutely no advantages.
