Fast eyesight deterioration?!

Question: Fast eyesight deterioration?
How quickly can eyesight deteriorate? I'm 20 years old and I've always had 20/10 vision but the past three months I've noticed it's beginning to feel harder to focus my eyes. I just covered each eye and tried to read distant text that I normally could read, but it was out of focus and I couldn't read it.

The past couple months I've been spending a lot of time in front of the computer screen (10 hours/day) with my new job, and that plus a less than healthy diet is probably agitating things.

Is this permanent, or if I try healthier habits can I regain the eyesight I used to have?

Are you on any new medication? When I started Lyrica, my sight became seriously blurry. Now that I no longer take it my sight has went back to normal. If you're on a new medication, you may want to visit your doctor.

There is research which indicates that reading in low-light, and sitting too close to a TV will not affect your eyesight (contrary to what you mom and pop might tell you).

If you are staring at a monitor for 10 hours a day, it is possible that your eyes are fatigued, and you should try to rest your eyes whenever you can. Medication can cause this too, if you have noticeably worse vision after starting a new drug, contact your doctor immediately.

ask your parents when they started to lose their eye sight, if they wear glasses, as this is your best measure for how fast your eyes will genetically worsen.

there is really no evidence that computer screens permanently damage your eyes as another poster has said. however it is common for people who work in front of the screens to find that their eyes are temporarily worse at teh end of the day. With a job in front of a computer screen you need to make sure you are following all the advice for reducing eye strain. Adjust your screen and keyboard properly ( there is advice on this on answers , but your firm should provide written advice). Make sure you are drinking enough water not tea/coffee. Its a common problem that people dehydrate when working in front of screens and it doesn't help your eyes or your general health. I go for a minimum of 2 litres. Try and get a break midday and use yoru distance vision - go for a walk if possible. Same at teh end of teh day. I know this can be difficult but it really does pay in all sorts of ways if you have to work long term on screens. Try and get one day a week when you don't use the screens and just use your farsight. If you are working on screens it can be better to cut your recreational use.

Its probably an idea to get an eyetest as well. Working long hours on the screen exposes even tiny problems in eyesight and it culd be you are now noticing more somethign which has always been a problem.
