sever dry eye? what's next?!

Question: Sever dry eye? what's next?
I have Lebers, optic nerve atrophy, so basically I'm almost totally blind, last year I went to the eye doctor complain of severe photophobia, and sensivity to preasure. the doctor stained my eye's and said I had moderate to severe dry eye and to try artifical tears and gel to alleivate the syntoms.

this helped alot if I keeped up with it, but now my eye's really burn and the gel I use only gives me about an hour of relife. I don't know what else to do? I'm dying here and my photophobia is back and I can't even keep my eye's open. I have hormonal imbalance issues (crushed patutary gland) which is the cause of my dry eye. I can't afford restasis (sp?) what's next? help

Having to put the gel in every hour would not be considered excessive. You could switch to an ointment like Lacrilube which would last longer. You could have punctal plugs put in place. You could start using a mild steroid drop. Fluoromethalone is available as a generic so it is pretty inexpensive. Steroid drops have the potential to cause cataracts and glaucoma so it would be up to your doctor to consider how those risks fit in with your already decreased vision.
