Why would a 15 year old need reading glasses?!

Question: Why would a 15 year old need reading glasses?
My 15 year old daughter was cleaning her room the the other day and I saw that she bought her self reading glasses. I know for a fact that she does not have distance vision problems, but she does reade a lot. The reason I am asking this is because I am confused she said I bought them for her but I did not. And I just want to know why she would need them.

Thank you so much for your help

I am presuming they were not prescribed, something bought at Walmart etc. Chances are, she just got them because she though they looked cool or maybe all her friends got glasses. (A lot of kids are doing this lately). Wearing them won't hurt her eyes but she won't be able to see distance very well with them on. Let her know, if she wants glasses as a fashion accessory (but doesn't need them) she can get fake glasses quite cheaply on line or in some stores. Note: fake glasses are NOT the same as reading glasses; they have no lens power at all (like safety glasses) they won't interfere with vision.

Possibly Hyperopia, also known as far-sightedness. People with far-sightedness can usually see very well at a distance (depending on the severity of the refractive error) but need correction for reading and/or computer work. However, if she does not need reading glasses she should probably not be wearing them as it could cause the need for glasses later on if the muscles in her eyes don't need to work to see what's in front of her.

I will agree with glutton except for the end, which is incorrect.

Unless this is just peer pressure (which should not be discounted), she is likely hyperopic (also known as farsighted, or long-sighted in the UK).

Wearing glasses will not cause her to need them more. Wearing them will make her more comfortable.

Any ophthalmologist and most optometrists should be able to easily check out her vision and dispell the wearing glasses caused you to need them myth.

1. She wanted to fit in. One of her friends may have bought one, so she did.
2. It helps her see a little bit.
3. She thought it looked cool.

Maybe she doesn't, maybe she thinks they look cool. But wearing glasses you don't need can damage healthy eye sight so maybe have a chat with her about them.
