Bad peripheral vision with new glasses?!

Question: Bad peripheral vision with new glasses?
My husband just got new glasses and he sees fine if he looks straight ahead, but if he looks slightly to the side, his peripheral vision/off-center view through the glasses' lenses is quite blurry. His prescription is very strong (-7.5 in both eyes, no astigmatism). The new glasses are high-index and I am wondering if the high-index lenses are causing this. His old glasses were not high index, and do not produce this problem. Or is this the kind of problem you get when the pd has been measured wrong? Or what else could be the problem for the blurry peripheral vision? Is the prescription bad (even though he sees fine looking straight ahead)?

This sounds wierd. Normally, even with pretty strong lenses, he should be able to see in focus looking off center of his glasses. Of course, when you don't look through the centers of the lenses, there will be some distortion; straight things (like telephone poles, door frames, etc) look curved, this effect becomes more pronounced with stronger prescriptions, but his vision should be more or less clear. I don't think the PD is wrong, if that was the case, the glasses would "feel wierd" even when looking straight ahead. I suggest going back where you got them and see if they have any explanation for it. I'm thinking there is some kind of defect in the lenses.
