Glaucoma? could i have it?!
Question: Glaucoma? could i have it?
Answers:
well if you have no symptoms then its likely that you don't have it at least not yet but you could develop it.
the only way to know if you are at risk is to make an appointment to have your eyes checked.
and its true that an optometrist can diagnose it and treat it to an extent BUT if you needed surgery for your glaucoma (like me) then you would HAVE to go to an ophthalmologist cuz optometrists cannot preform surgery (with the exception of the state of oklahoma)
i'm 24 and i've had glaucoma since i was 11. oh and eye drops are nothing to be squeamish about.
no one here knows if you have glaucoma or not. you'd need an exam. yes, its possible.
you don't need an "ophthalmologist" for this. I'm a Glaucoma Specialist in Texas & I diagnose, manage & treat glaucoma nearly daily. most American optometrists do as well, much to the chagrin of the ophthalmology lobby. go to an optometrist or ophthalmologist. either one.

well go to the ophthalmologist for a comprehensive evaluation and risk assessment!

I only know one lobby: the optometrist one!
The same is in every country around the world!
Everyone loves to be called "doctor" and wear a white coat, but the question is if they deserve that!
There's no "doctor" who can compare the preparation and culture of an ophthalmologist in the "eye field"...
the problem is that the visual system is extremely well explored and so everyone who buy a slit lamp, thinks that looking in a patiet's eye means to know more than real "MD"...

Glaucoma doesn't start to cause damage until later in life. You're 15. There is a genetic component to glaucoma though, so you should continue to get your eyes examined each year as you get older!
