whats wrong with my eyes?!

Question: Whats wrong with my eyes?
ok, i'm a mess. i get sharp pains in my chest, usually around the heart area. pains in my calves when im sleeping or laying down. & the scariest one is the loss of vision i endure from time to time. out of nowhere i feel lightheaded & then everything i see starts to turn into black holes & the holes expand reproduce until my whole "screen", so to speak, is blacked out. my body feels week & i feel around me until i can grab something. when i get my vision back, i get a slight headache lasting about 5 seconds & the lighthead feeling slowly gets lifted. sometimes when i cant see & feel lightheaded say things that when i regain sight & conciousness, dont really make sence.& then im fine, & normal like it never happened?! my mom keeps saying im fine & that this always happens.. but i think its a real problem, does anyone know what this is?

Do you lose your vision like this when you stand up, after you have been sitting or laying down? If so, that is normal and is just the result of your heart not pumping blood fast enough to your head when you change the gravitational pull on your body by standing. So if this is the case, I wouldn't worry about the vision issues because that's normal.

However, if that is not the case of how you lose your vision, then you need to see a medical doctor and/or an optometrist immediately. Losing your vision is NEVER a good thing and usually indicates some sort of problem with blood. Your eyes are very sensitive to blood flow so for example, if you have plaques or cholesterol in your arteries that temporarily block a blood vessel (which causes your vision to black out) it is possible those little blockages could be occuring in your brain as well, which could potentially lead to a stroke and death. I don't mean to scare you and this may not be your case, but it is a possibility.

In any event, I wouldn't think that pains in your heart is a good thing either. The pains in your calves may just be "growing pains" but your heart area should never be having sharp pains. I would express your concern to your mother and see if you can't get it checked out.

But for sure on your vision, if you are not experiencing the normal vision-goes-black-when-you-stand-up and it is something else, get it checked out immediately.

I am an optometry intern.
