Dr. put me on Bentril, anyone else taken this medication? please help if you hav!

Question: I am looking for anyone who has taken this med before. Did you have any side effects? I just started it this morning at 9am, its now 3:17am and i am still not a bit sleepy. I know its supose to give you more energy etc. but all night? Just looking for anyone who has taken it and their experiences..

Please dont leave me comments about not taking meds, My doctor and I decided this was best for me to try with diet and exercise of course.

I also posted this is womans health because so many of us are always on a diet, thought may be someone might be able to help.
Thanks!

Onlymatch4u is obviously a little confused about medical-legal issues, or he made a mistake while typing. I'm sure he was not trying to be inflammatory of libelous.

Physicians are, of course, not precluded by law, ethics, the medical board or any other faction from speaking to you about nutrition. I think most physcians would agree that there is not enough time in the 4 years of medical school, to learn everything there is to know about nutrition, though there are classes in nutrition in medical school.

Bariatricians, however, are usually very familiar with nutrition. They are also familiar with the fact that "Fad Diets" such as the no carbo diet, the all protien diet, the all carbo diet, the nothing white diet (a particular favorite of mine) and of course the "Miracle Soup" diet, all cause some weight loss and usually result in a yo-yo effect for most dieters. As a matter of fact dieting, as it is understood by most people in the US, just does not work.

The only way to lose weight, and keep the weight off, is to take in less calories than you use. However, many people with weight problems, have physical limitations which prevent adequate exercise, and are unable for some reason to control their intake (there are many factors affecting this).

I always try to get my patients to lose weight with proper nutritional management and exercise. As a matter of fact, it is important that the physicians do this before using medications or other therapies. However, frequently, from the patient interview, it can be learned that they have made adequate attempts.

Medication support is a reasonable method for helping to control appetite while, building up exercise stamina. Just make sure you have a nutritionally sound diet.

As for the Bontril, as you took one dose this morning and you are still feeling the effects, we will assume you are on Bontril SR which is the sustained release formulation. Insomnia is a common side effect of this formulation. This effect may or may not persist. Some patients adapt to this effect after a few days. It is usually recommended to take the medication before the first morning meal, but that timing would not have significantly changed the effect you are having now.

If this effect persist or becomes bothersome, contact the prescribing physician. You may be a candidate for the immediate release or short acting formulation, or you may need to consider another therapy.

I hope all works for you!

You'll definitely want to call your doctor in the morning; it is an amphetimine, but shouldn't keep you this hyper for this long.

Good luck.

Bontril is the brand name of a medication called Phendimetrazine. This drug was originally designed as a weight medication, but is similar in chemical composition to an amphetamine. The medicine, stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain), which then increases your heart rate and blood pressure. Because Bontril is habit forming, the drug is only used as a short-term supplement to exercise and diet. It is important to note that you can become physically and psychologically dependent on this medication, and withdrawal effects may occur when you stop taking it. It is advised that you talk to your doctor about stopping this medication gradually. Side effects include: allergic reaction, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, very high blood pressure and abnormal behavior. If any weight is lost using Bontril, our research shows that it is usually regained shortly after the user discontinues the drug.

I know you don't want to hear this, but doctors are precluded BY LAW from deviating from this procedure: first diagnose you, then treat you with drugs or surgery only. If they deviate from this, they will lose their license.

Of course your doctor told you he looked at all the alternatives and chose this drug for you to take to lose weight. It's because he is bound by law to not choose nutrition as an alternative. This drug is dangerous! It works like an amphetamine, that is why you are still up at 3:17 a.m.! Do you honestly believe it is good for you and a good alternative?

You need to educate yourself, your doctor doesn't understand nutrition and how it can nourish you and help you lose weight naturally. He will tell you to eat a balance diet (that he has no clue as to what that really is) and to take a multi-vitamin pill (that statistically shows you will die earlier than someone who doesn't take those things)!

Unfortunately, you have to avoid doctors when trying to determine what is good nutrition. Find a good Certified Nutritional Therapist to help you. They understand how the body works and can help you greatly.

Read the book: "Life Without Bread" by Christian Allan, pH.D. to understand about carbs and fats. Look on page 140 and you will see a series of photos of a boy that was huge and then became very normal by altering his diet.

good luck
