Question about the IUD Mirena?!

Question: I am currently on Loestrin 24. It is very effective and has regulated my cycle, so I'm really happy with it... But it costs me $52.77 a month. As a college student, I can't really afford that every month... I only work part-time due to my school schedule.

I am interested in getting an IUD because birth control is very expensive. I've been reading up on Mirena, but the website states that it is only given to "candidates who may be pregnant or have already had one child". I don't want children, but I am in a monogamous relationship. Does this mean I'm not eligible? Will my Doctor be able to give me the IUD?

I just decided on getting this particular birth control put in. I do not and have never had children. The doctor explained to me that the only reason they say that is because it is easier and less painful to put in if you have previously given birth. Mirena lasts for 5 years and you can have it removed at any time. Since you are in a monogamous relationship this would probably be the best bet for you. The initial cost (without insurance is $500-$800) is a bit on the high side but think about it. If you take your $52.77/month and figure how much you would spend in 5 years staying with that method it would cost you $3166.20. The overall cost saves you tons! The Mirena also causes a decrease (or may stop it completly) in your menstrul cycle. This was a big plus for me! This is an estrogen-free birth control. This is 99.9% effective. I would make an appt with your OB or go to a free clinic and discuss your options and what is best for you with the doctor. You know your body and lifestyle the best. Good luck!

Talk to your doctor first because they are the experts. I have a 5-year IUD and I love it. I've had it for 2 1/2 years now. I also have two sons and don't wan't anymore children, but was told by my ob/gyn that I could have the IUD removed at any time so that I could get pregnant again. So, I think that you should be able to get on the IUD and have it removed later on.

Yes, Its safe.
If you dont get Mirena ($500.00-800.00) you should get a copper IUD which is a lot cheaper. Every peson is different so you should discuss it with your doctor before you do anything. The Mirena with lower or completely make your perod go away. The coper one can make it heavier, but they are both very effective.
Good luck!

You should speak with your dr if you have one. But I dont believe it harms your body any so I think it would be safe for you to use. I've had one, It wasn't right for my body but it seems to work for alot of other women out there. It is a good choice for bc I think. good luck with your decision.

I live in England UK
I had the Mirena IUD put in 5years ago my doctor never had a problem with the fact that i had not had children. As far as it only being given to "candidates who maybe pregnant" if the IUD is put in a pregnant woman it would be very dangerous & she would lose the baby.
Every woman is different but the Mirena IUD was extremely painful while they put it in & it was 18 months before my periods settled down

I've had my Mirena for almost 2 months now. I didn't get it for birth control but rather to relieve menstrual problems. I love it. The insertion is uncomfortable but bearable. Costwise, I have medical insurance and it was covered at $550 plus Office/Dr fees which added to a total I believe $1000 altogether. Which is nothing compared to the $3,000 i'd end up paying in 5 yrs time in copayments for birth control pills. I have had no side effects, my period has already stopped. As to the recommendation of a woman already having a child before getting the Mirena, I suggest you speak to your dr. I have seen some dr.'s actually fit women with Mirena's even though they haven't had children but only he knows and can really recommend it, if it's something that would work for you, insertionwise (you have no children) and would not interfere with your future plans of having children.
