You learn about: Reproductive anatomy and physiology. Breast feeding. What to expect if a Cesarean birth becomes necessary. Relaxation techniques during labor. The stages of labor. Birthing rooms. Braxton-Hicks contractions. Etc.
As for benefit, it's always good to be educated before embarking on a new situation. And, it gets your husband or significant other in there with you.
Some like to have their children close together in order for them to grow up together. Some like them a couple years apart to give mom a rest in between. Some things, like divorce and remarriage, can affect the timing. I personally like the idea of having them when you're young, and not having them when you're at an age where you should be kicking them out, not having them. <grin>
Tell the two year old early on that he or she is gonna be a big brother or sister, then involve them in preparations, i.e. picking out color schemes for the nursery, Put the toddler's hand on your belly and let him or her feel the baby moving. There are probably good picture books on the subject as well for little ones.
