I was 15 the first time I went to the gynecologist. My mom took me because I had not had my period yet. The best thing you can do is relax when you are in there. If you are nervous and tense it will make the exam uncomfortable. You can have your mom stay and hold your hand if that would make you feel better.

They have instruments in all shapes and sizes, so they will use the smallest ones possible to make it more comfortable for you. I used to be an exam room assistant for Planned Parenthood and can describe the exam in detail if you would like, just send me an email.

I'm 14 and I haven't been to one yet either!

And you'd have to go because even if your not havin sex you still need to make sure your healthy!

weird, we have the same name haha

just a little hint, when you write "ladies only" that probably gets more guys to click on it

Uu already tottally right im notinot that and im 15 and my mom is making me go there!

I started when I was 16.
They just check to make sure everything is healthy and working properly.

im 15 havent gone yet, but i heard they stick some metal thing in ur vagina and open it up or something :S

If you remain a virgin for the rest of your life you would still have to go see the gynecologist. There are many things that can go wrong besides std's and pregnancies that have nothing to do with sex. Your mom is right. You need to be checked regularly. One of the things the doc might talk or show you is how to check your breasts properly. They may want to do a pap and pelvic. In a pap they open your legs and insert a speculum that keeps your vagina open so they can gather some cells and make sure you are healthy. A pelvic they put their finger inside and push on your abdomen looking for lumps or anything that's not normal.
peace

Hmmm....maybe she just wants you to go meet the gynecologist and discuss birth control options for the future? It's always good to be prepared. Also, perhaps she wants to see about the Gardasil shot which has to be given before age 25.Its a vaccine against HPV...In the future (i.e. when you do become sexually active) it can prevent certain strains of HPV (which is a common thing)...google it...and thus can protect you from yucky things down the road such as herpes, and cervical cancer....definately a good idea. If so,the shot is just a set of 3 spaced out and is in the arm...not scary. And if you are given a PAP smear/vaginal exam....its not as scary as you'd think. But I don't think you'd need to do that if everything's good down there & w/ your period, and you're not having sex.

I went when I was 17, but honestly, I would have been glad to go sooner. They don't do anything seriously painful, it's really not that bad at all, it's just scary the first time cause you know someone is going to be looking at your privates, but they're doctors, it's their job, and they only have your best interest in mind.

You should go when you become sexually active, turn 18, or have a problem, whichever comes first. I went because I had a yeast infection, if you get a yeast infection at 14, then you should go. It's something you're gonna have to do every once in a while for a long time, and after you get the 1st one out of the way, it's really not that bad, so best to suck it up and get it over with, it's part of growing up and becoming a woman.

the first time you supposed to go is when you get your first period. there's really not a certain age since every girl starts her period at a different age.

I still haven't gone, and I'm 15. Mostly it's because my mom doesn't know I want an appointment. (I want to get birth control because I have a terribly crampy and miserable period.)

I did do some research, though, and the physical exam, the dreaded part, lasts only about 5 minutes. The doctor will use a tool to open you up down there, swab your cervix (the top of your canal) with a cotton swab, check everything and make sure it looks alright, take the tool out, and you should be done.

Most of the rest of the exam is questions and whatnot.

My mom has gone many times and says that it's not nearly as big of a deal as everyone makes it seem.
