Birth control prescription refill question?!

Question: I feel a bit stupid asking this but I went on birth control a couple weeks ago and the GYN gave me a prescription good for a 3 month supply plus the one month she gave me. Once those 3 months are out, do I have to go back to the GYN to get another prescription or what? I've never handled my own prescriptions before so I'm not quite sure what to do now.

You don't need to see the doc again for this purpose until your next annual, unless you have a problem with the pill she presribed you. You probably misread the prescription and it was a 3 month supply with 3 refills (12 months worth). If not, your pharmacy will contact the doc for you regarding refills which your doc will probably gladly refill until you are due for your next physical.

Yes you'll need to get a new one.
If your Doctor allows it she/he may be able to just call it in to the pharmacy instead of you having to go down there to pick it up.
Have your pharmacy's number ready when you call your Doc.

Check on the prescription label, which should say you have three more refills. You take that back to the pharmacy, and get another three month supply. If you have already thrown away that particular package, then hopefully the pharmamcy will be able to locate the script in their files and give you your refill. If not, you just call the doctor and ask to have it re-written again. And you will have to pay for the refills each time, by the way. Plus, be sure to save the package with the label, so you don't run into this again in three months. It's a good idea to refill it before you finish the last pack, so there isn't a delay in starting a new pack.

She just wants to make sure that pill will work for you before giving you a longer prescription. Sometimes the first one doesn't work as well as something you may try later, as far as side effects go. When you have 2-3 weeks before you run out, call the Dr.'s office and tell them it is working fine and you would like to get a refill.

Well, some doctors allow you to call or order online (If you do it online, you have to give them your pharmacist number. They will call you in a perscription). Or you go in. If your gynecologist gave you one for 3 months, I'm assuming she wanted to see you back in three months for whatever reason. My gynecologist gave me 3 months on perscriptions around the first time I started going. Then, he just went to "I'll see you in a year".

I suggest just going back.

Edit: I agree with the person above me. She wants to see if the birth control is working. My gynecologist did the exact same thing. Go back.

Your prescription bottle should say on there how many refills are available. Mine says 11 because my prescription was filled this month. All you need to do is call the pharmacy and have it refilled. If it says 0 refills, your doctor will either have to call it in or you'll have to go back and get a new prescription.
