Yes, it's extremely hard on your hair. Even using one of the new special irons designed for drying and straightening wet hair at the same time is bad.
I was interested in it because I have really curly hair and I was trying to decide if I should keep growing it or cut it off. I usually blow mine straight, but it takes a long time when my hair gets longer, so I investigated the new irons, and then talked to the guy who has been doing my hair since I was 14. He said flat irons are the worst of the heat tools you can use on your hair. Blow drying and curling irons are bad enough, but those flat irons are the worst. He said that because of how it straightens the cuticle, and makes it lie flat, it makes the hair very soft and shiny, so people assume it's good for their hair, but that's not the case.
He told me that it's okay to use one every once in a while, like for special occasions, but regular use will really damage your hair. Since he's been a hairstylist for more than 25 years, and has worked with some of the leading hairstylists in both the US and Europe, I believe he knows what he is talking about.
You should encourage your sis to find other ways of styling her hair. A head full of damaged hair is a mess, and looks terrible. No one wants to have to deal with that ;)

it is not bad if u are using a wet to dry strightener. but like if u are using a normal one it can break it.
yes this is not good for ur hair. It can damage it so badly. Try letting it dry or use a hair dryer on low power.

Heat treatments in general can be very damaging. I would assume it would be more harmful to your straight iron than your hair if it isn't made to straighten wet hair.
Ashley, think about what an iron does to your clothes . It's really going to damage your hair being wet and pulling on it with heat. It will take any elasticity right out of it. Imagine crepe paper after it's been stretched. It won't go back to the original shape.
