Pelvic exam?????!

Question: I just turned 14, and I am going to my physician for my yearly check up thing....do you think that she will do a pelvic exam? I am a virgin, and I haven't started my period, btw...but still.....I would like to know. Also, does getting a pelvic exam hurt? What do they do?

I seriously doubt at 14 & not sexually active that they would do a pelvic. The new guidelines are 21 y/o or sexually active. There's really no reason right now. They may do one tho if you still don't have a period at 16. Don't be afraid though-they really don't hurt that much. Basically the physician inserts 2 gloved fingers into your vagina-maybe 1 if you're a virgin-and feels your ovaries & uterus w/ the other hand on your abdomen. He may insert 1 into your rectum & feel also. He'll insert a speculum into your vagina which opens it up to view your cervix.

If you're also getting a pap smear, he'll insert a swab (w/ the speculum open) to get cells from your cervix.

i dont have time to explain what they do but im sure someone else will, i doubt that they would just give u an exam tho. generally u have that done after u start having sex or after ur 18. God bless

Considering your age and that you are not sexually active, I don't think the doctor is going to do a pelvic exam. Pelvics are usually deferred until you are 18 years old or become sexually active (which ever comes first). Also remember, that you have the right to refuse to do anything. So if the doctor wants to do a pelvic you can firmly refuse!
