What am I supposed to say to my gynecologist?!

Question: I went to my first gynecology exam a while ago. It was a bit awkward, not so so much because of being exposed or anything. I just don't know what to do or say.
What is the doctor supposed to look for?
Last time I went, I had a UTI infection, I wasn't sure, so I told my doctor the symptoms, and didn't really check it out. He just took a PAP smear, and handed me a form to go somewhere else to get tested for UTI.

I felt very confused after I left. He never look at my Vag. How is he supposed to know if anythings wrong if he doesn't look? I felt somewhat rushed and neglected about my appointment.
Is there a check up he's supposed to do, kinda like a inspection to make sure everything looks okay, etc..

Can some inform me about things I should be asking my doctor. or any regular procedures that I should know about? I'm clueless..

If he gave you a pap smear then he had to look at it sounds like a bad doctor If he didn't tell you you had something I would go somewhere else and normally they'll tell you what needs to be done and the procedure but maybe he sent a sample of the swab that he used on you to get test results back from and the hospital has got the lab on hand so it don't take as long for them

Leave that doc and go to another one... who actually cares.

many doctors prescribe before evaluating. this is bad because it contributes to bacteria resistance. it is also bad because it leaves patients like you feeling nervous that they are not correctly diagnosed. its awful. its important to trust your dr. if you can, try to switch to a new one.

I suggest you ask to see a woman doctor.

You have to have a pee test to test for a UTI. Looking at your cooter will tell the Dr. nothing. In fact, most of what they are "looking for" comes from test results, and from feeling around. I have never had a gyno stick their face in my vag, thank you very much.

If he didn't use a speculum, how did he do the pap? I def think that you got a bad exam, but he doesn;t have to put his face in your business to make it a good exam.

Gyno's (as with all doctors) are supposted to help you, not make you feel uncomfortable, slighted, or unimportant. Its time to look for a new doctor. Do you have any family or friends who could recommend a nice one to you?

go to another doctor

Get a new doctor. This one sucks.

I have been to Negligent doc's who have misdiagnosed me. I would find another doctor. A woman might also be easier to talk to

I can't believe that you were not checked for a UTI in his office. It is a common and easy test to do. Hate to say this but you should find a new gynie.

they will be able to tell if you have a UTI infection just by testing your urine. They will usually put you on some antibiotics to help the infection go away

You don't actually need to look at the vagina to diagnose a UTI, you're supposed to pee into a cup and test for white blood cells. Then, you'll be put on an antibiotic. The antibiotic will kill the infection as well as all of the good bacteria in your vagina, so you'll likely develop a yeast infection. Then you go to the gyno and he'll prescribe an antifungal cream or pessiary.

there is no reason he couldnt have checked for a UTI there. I usually go to my gyno when i think that is what i have. he was neglectful to not take care of the problem at that visit. i would without a doubt switch gynos. you need to feel comfortable and confident that that person can be entrusted with your heath. he definately isnt the one.

If the Dr took a PAP he must have looked at your Vagina. A UTI is something a urologist would have to investigate with urine samples etc, a gynaecologist would refer you on to this speciality.

As for feeling awkward i know it's not the most dignified of things to undergo, but they really do see it all everyday.

Feel free to ask your Dr anything! Even if it's just whether everything looks ok! It's understandable wanting to know about your own health.

I hope this makes it a little clearer!!
xx

In a routine check up, the gyno will usually take a pap smear and possibly check for breast cancer. Usually they dont really umm...examine it your vagina fully unless there is need to. Sometimes the dr. will feel around internally as well as externally for any abnormalities (such as cysts or tumors) either way the check up isnt that intense.

yes it is called a pap smear test
