CONFUSED ABOUT birthcontrol?!

Question: I expect my period April 21-23 ... and it's April 3rd today, I want to make an appointment at my community clinic to buy birthcontrol pills, I'm 15, when do you think I should go? I was thinking 14th - 16th cause I know I can't take the pills until after my next period...say I buy them on the 19th and I don't get my period until the 23rd...I was wondering if I can just leave them in my room until after my period...or when I buy them do I have to start taking them right away

You can go and get the birth control for whenever is convenient, as long as you have it when you need it.

There are several different kinds of birth control. Ask your doctor, or do some research, to find out specific side effects and COST (some can be pretty pricey)..

The Pill - this is the obvious one, you take it once a day for three weeks then skip a week (although there are pills now you can take for longer...I don't know about them) and there are MANY different pills to take, you doctor would be the best one to pick the right pill for you, as they all have slight differences. I've been on three different pills, before deciding that the pill just isn't for me (aggravates my migraines).

The Patch - I believe, you put it on and change it every week, then you leave it off for a week to get your period. I tried the patch, BUT, I found it very irritating to my skin and took it off after 3 days. So, I would say probably not good for anyone with sensitive skin.

The Needle - I was on Depo-provera. It's great. You get it once every 12 weeks (about)... periods disappear... really effective... HOWEVER, it **can** cause bone density problems... so my doctor refuses to prescribe it anymore :( which is probably a good thing... I don't want osteoporosis when I'm older...

The Ring - this i've never tried, but I have friends who love it. You insert a ring leave it for three weeks. Take it out for a week and then insert a fresh one.

Remember though, if you're having sex, condoms should be used as well. Condoms are your BEST (although far from perfect) bet against STD's... and it never hurts to have that extra protection from pregnancy :)

Good Luck.

I think you should go when your 19

when you go to get your physical, you of course can't be on your period. They'll give you some trial packs and you are to start your first pack the sunday (usually it's a sunday) after you start your next period, even if you are still on your period.

You can't just walk in and buy them, they have to examine you. When this happens, this person is the one you should be asking these questions to.

When you buy them, you do not have to start taking them right away. The pills will not expire after a few weeks (though I believe they can lose potency after years time) It is okay to leave them in your room for a few days until you wait for the right time to start the pack. It is better to be prepared than to miss a day or two and start your pack of pills late.

If you get the shot instead of having to remember to take a pill everyday you don't have to ever worry about when your last period was or is gonna be. You only have to go get a painless shot once every 3 months and the even better news is that you are very likely to not have any periods or cramps. Which I think is wonderfull!!!

just because you bought birth control pills doesnt mean you have to take them right away. You are still very young and to be sexually active that is very young as well.

You shouldnt be so worried about starting it at the right time. I say just to keep timing right make your appointment if you must to protect yourself. Personally, i would rather you start on birth control and reduce the risk of getting pregnant. Make your appointment with the clinic and then start taking the pill at the end of your period.

You can leave the pills in your room for as long as you like. Your body doesnt know you bought medications, only if you take them will anything start to work. While you are there i would ask any questions you might have about ANYTHING, they are there to help! The sooner the better.

I hope you are NOT having sex at 15. If you are at least you're trying to be safe but I still think you should abstain.

You can get the pills whenever you have the time and save them. You'll need to start the first pill on the FIRST Sunday of your period (even if you are still bleeding).

I also suggest you speak with your doctor just to double check he/she might have other advice. That is what they are there for.

EDIT:
I don't recommend the depo shot. A friend of mine was on it for 3 years and it sterilized her (she can never have children).

FYI: If you are having sex, the pill takes a month to kick in. So, in short the first month you take it you can still get pregnant. Also, if you are ever on antibiotics they cancel out the birth control pills and you can get pregnant (keep that in mind for the future).

EDIT2:
I can't tell you what brand to go with. That is something for you to discuss with your doctor. He/She may want to put you on a low hormone pill because of your age...

Hope this helps.

with birth control, im guessing you mean the pill.
you have both placebo or sugar pill and the normal pill to stop pregnancies. when you start your period you take the sugar pills. each pill is marked by a day and after the sugar pills you start on the proper pills and as you do your period will stop. so go before you get your period and the Dr will explain alot better. but yes go before and you can store the pill in your room as you generally get 3-4 slides in a pack. a slide will last you a whole month.
Also as you will find there are different pills on the market and each is as good as the next. but you will find some are better then others. i started on levlen when i was 17 and found it made me increase my appetite and i put on a a few kilos. whereas now i changed to yasmin which does a range of things as well as preventing preg. such as controls oily skin and acne doesnt increase appetite, hair isnt as oily ect: so you will have to find the right one for you.

but yes if your having sex go and get the pill before your next period but remember the pill wont prevent stds and things so make sure you play it safe and use a condom! its your choice what you do and dont let other push you into it and dont let others convince you your not ready. you will know when your ready. enjoy!
