Is it ok to intentionally skip your period using your birth control pills?!

Question: Instead of taking the "placebo" or "inactive" pills... Is it ok to just start your new pack? If so, how often can you do this?

There are doctors who encourage it. And it is absolutely safe to do so.

Thus the development of birth control pills like Seasonale, where the user will experience just four periods per year.

There are GYNs who recommend skipping periods as a course of treatment, especially when they are treating patients with endometriosis or who experience conditions such as ovarian cysts or have uterine fibroids.

If you're not planning on becoming pregnant right now, it's absolutely fine to do this.

One other thing, the type of pill is important. If it is a low-dose pill, skipping the placebos and continuing on to the next pack of pills will not hold off your period for long. You will likely experience breakthrough bleeding, that can go on for weeks.

Discuss what you'd like to do with your doctor, so that he/she can prescribe the pills as required for the result you want.

The nurse told me it's pefectly safe, and you can do it up to three times in a row, no more.

It's fine to do, but don't skip your period more than 3 times in a row. If your periods are really bad and painfull etc, than i would probably do this. I spoke to my nurse about this the otherday actually and she said if there's a time when your don't want your period for something, than it's fine to skip your period occasionally. But she said the less you do it the better because that means over your conceptive life, the more periods you skip (thus taking more hormones/pills than you would have), your putting more hormones into your body than you would have otherwise normally/naturally.

This depends on the type/brand of birth control you are taking. Some of the pills work fine for that, like Yaz or Yasmin, while others will not work if you try to skip it by starting the new pack, especially if you have been taking them a while, like Ortho-Tri-Cyclen. If you do want to skip, and you judge it's safe for yourself (remember you are the one taking the risk), be sure to IMMEDIATELY start the new pack on the first day of the inactive pills. If you even let it go one day, by taking one inactive or not taking an active, your body will trigger a period and you will have bleeding, possibly bleeding that won't stop even after the time period of your normal period. If you feel you must skip a period, try to let yourself have a period at least one out of every three months. The more times you have a period (as in each month), the healthier it is for you, but in my experience, if you must skip, one every three months is a necessity. Never doubt asking your doctor. He/she can probably help you more effectively. Good luck!

ONLY if you get approval from your DOCTOR.

do not screw with prescription drugs unless you have doctor permission to do so.

Not all pills allow you to skip your placebos without serious repercussions. And it doesn't always work.

If you want to skip your period, talk to your doctor about getting on Seasonale, Seasonique, or Lybrel.
