Once you start puberty a white and/or clear, non-foul smelling discharge (mucous) is normal. The vagina is self-cleaning. You will also have your own 'scent' (musky) and it will smell stronger to you than to others. This same discharge increases the closer you get to ovulation and when you are sexually aroused. Trust me, you don't ever want it to go away.

Different Types of Discharge:

White: Thick, white discharge is common at the beginning and end of your cycle. Normal white discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick white discharge can indicate a yeast infection.

Clear and stretchy: This is "fertile" mucous and means you are ovulating.

Clear and watery: This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercising.

Yellow or Green: May indicate an infection, especially if thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.

Brown: May happen right after periods, and is just "cleaning out" your vagina. Old blood looks brown.

Different types of infections:

Signs of yeast infections:
White, cottage cheese-like discharge
Swelling and pain around the vulva
Intense itching

Signs of bacterial vaginosis:
A white, gray or yellowish vaginal discharge
A fishy odor that is strongest after sex or after washing with soap
Itching or burning
Slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva

Signs of trichomoniasis
A watery, yellowish or greenish bubbly discharge
An unpleasant odor
Pain and itching when urinating
Most apparent after your period

its normal, i have it too. tht means the vagina is cleaning itself.

Depends really on how bad the smell is.

Have you any other symptoms? Itchyness, painful when urinating etc.

a foul odor and discharge in the vagina could be a vaginal infection, STD or STI-- my advice make an appt for a pap smear. you will probably need antibiotics to clear up whatever you have. the longer you wait the worse off things will get and sometimes vaginal infections, STD's and STI's if thats what it is can cause infertility. Advice for the first answerer the vagina does clean itself but it doesnt come with a really bad smell.... An odor is natural in the vagina because as we females know vaginas do have a smell but we also can differentiate the natural smell to an irregualr smell. Go get a pap done if the odor is foul or fishy smelling, or if you have weird discharge. Discharge is also natural but when you have extra discharge something is wrong or you may preggo.
