How long a period is too long with a copper IUD?!

Question: How long a period is too long with a copper IUD!?
Having my second full cycle since receiving copper (non-hormonal) IUD!. Arrived on time, virtually no symptoms (no pain, no cramps, not heavier than usual)!. However, I'm on Day 12 of bleeding, and it doesn't seem to be tapering off! How long is too long!? At what point should I go to the doctor!? It's not a problem - just an annoyance!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi this is a quite a common side effect from when you first have the copper coil fitted!. Your Dr should have explained this to you!. For the first couple of months you may experience erratic, heavy and sometimes longer periods!. This should settle down after a few months!.

You don't need to go to the Dr just yet!. Leave it a bit longer!. The only real medical concern is that prolonged bleeding can in theory put you at risk from iron deficiency anaemia, but you should be OK to leave it a bit longer, if you start feeling unwell then see your Dr!. Things should settle down fairly soon!. If the bleeding is becoming problematic you could ask your Dr for Cyklokapron which should help stop or at least reduce the bleeding!.

For the vast majority of women the copper coil causes no problems!. If this coil doesn't work, then as your Dr for the Mirena (hormone) coil, this is more expensive, but better!. Many Drs no longer use the copper coil anymore!.

I think the point has come when you need to speak to your doctor or the practice nurse to check you and put your mind at rest!.
7 to 8 days is common and bleeding does decrease over the months, but 12 days does seem a lot!.
I know women should be screened for anaemia before inserting the IUD because of the risk of heavy bleeding!.

I was on for three weeks once!. But go to doctors just to be sure it's okay!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
