Is it normal to have no symptoms beside discharge before your first period?!

Question: Is it normal to have no symptoms beside discharge before your first period?
I'm 14 and today at school, I went to the toilet to find that I had some brown/reddish discharge in my undies which I realised was my first period. What really puzzles me is that before that I haven't had any of the symptoms that people get before the first period. I have only had some yellow/clear discharge for about 3 years. But no, cramps or pain in the body, headaches, mood swings etc. Is that normal for some people? I wasn't even expecting my first period. Please explain, thanks.
