Heavy blood clotting (17yrs old)?!

Question: Heavy blood clotting (17yrs old)?
I am 16, almost 17, and I have been having very bad clots for the past few weeks. Usually, I do have longer periods, about 1-2 weeks, but they aren't very heavy. Infact, they are pretty light. However, this month it has been bad. For the past three weeks or so, I have had very heavy blood clots coming out to the point where I can feel them. And this is during school, so I have to run to the bathroom every passing time, and even during class just because it freaks me out to feel it coming. They have gotten as big as about a golf ball, but some are smaller. There was one week where I thought it stopped. Then this week it started again. I have had to wear a super thick pad (that usually you would wear when you go to bed) to school every day because I worry that it will leak through.

Today I was just doing homework then saw a play with my family later. After the play was done (about 3 hours later), we stood up to leave, and I could feel it come out. We stopped at a grocery store the way home and I went to the bathroom, and saw that it had gone through even to my pants (I was wearing a super thick bedtime pad).

I know I shouldn't be, because I'm almost 17 already, but I am nervous to bring this up to my mom. My sister (18yrs) had trouble getting her period, so she is taking pills. But I'm just not comfortable talking with my mom about this. She got a hysterectomy a while ago for medical reasons, and I still feel uncomfortable asking her to get me pads. I don't know what to do! Usually I keep to myself about things like this, and just wait it through. But what if it keeps going at the pace it is? Should I just wait it out and see?

I am just so stressed right now! I have an 8 minute speech tomorrow...not like that has to do with anything. But what if it starts to happen really bad during my speech! Oh gosh...this is just terrible! Any advice?

You should see a doctor about this. Having so much heavy bleeding is not great, and in any case, having periods of 1-2 weeks is definitely not normal. The doc will likely just put you on birth control pills, but this is really something you need to have taken care of. Also, it's not your responsibility as a kid to worry about your mother's feelings about her hysterectomy. In fact, it's quite unhealthy physically and emotionally to think that instead of possibly hurting your mother's feelings, you'd rather continue to suffer a health problem. I'm saying this because I was a sensitive kid and always worried about my mother's feelings, and now, years later, as an adult myself, I see that it's wrong to put such a burden on a child. You need to assert yourself and create appropriate boundaries between yourself and your mother. And part of that involves going to her when you are having a health problem, rather than ignoring the problem for fear it will upset her. Good luck!

is there any way you could have been pregnant? maybe a misscarrage?

i just had the same thing happen to me last week. i was also really worried but i read something about having heavy blood colts and they say it is normal. my blood colts were so large, when i went to the toilet, they fell in. sorry to be so gross but i know what you are going through. i was even wearing a overnight pad and it went through my pants too. so, i tried wearing two overnight pads they are always super heavy flow they are in the purple package they worked really well. someone told me once to wear depends but they are pain in the a*ss to wear. but don't worry because after a few days the colts should stop. if they continue, see your obgyn. i hope this helped and good luck with your speech tomorrow =D

You need to get seen by a doctor as soon as possible. Bleeding like that is not normal, especially since you are soaking pads as much as you are. You did not mention whether or not you are sexually active, if you are this could be a sign of miscarriage. If you are not already I would suggest getting on vitamins or iron pills because that much blood loss can cause anemia.

I'm the same age and used to have this as a regular thing back in middle school. It's normal so don't worry to much, it's probably stress. Stress does many, strange things to our bodies, even if we've had it before and usually influences our periods more than anything. It could also be the changing and aging of your body. Things might feel, look, and act the same, but your body goes through change whether you notice it or not.
I highly suggest you talk to your mom or sister about it. I know it might feel uncomfortable, I'm kind of the same way, but trust me, it really helps in the long run. If it doesn't let up, try seeing a gynecologist, they're THE most knowledgeable and they'll let you know what could be going on.
I hope things get better, hun. =)
