I'd use pads, as a tampon can cause you to be sore down there the first few times (not used to having something there, or having periods lol). I use Always pads, they've worked great for me for 10 years, but you can use anything you want. They're really comfortable to me though, and I bleed a lot on my periods. good luck :-)

Starting out, most girls use pads and I recommend that. Tampons shouldn't be worn if your flow is REALLY light, so until you learn your flow and cycle better, stick with pads.
Honestly, brands aren't anything to me. I don't see the difference, a pad is a pad, and a tampon is a tampon! You bleed on them, and they end up in the trash so I could use any brand my mom brings home, I wouldn't care. Some brands that are common are:
-Kotex
-Always
and
-Stayfree
it is best to start with pads but use tampons if you are confident to, but make sure you use a light one along with a panty liner in case you leak. I would recommend always ultra or tampax depending on what you choose to use. but make sure you use a pad to absorbe your flow although regular should be fine for your first period.
